Administrators at Central Wisconsin Airport said Friday's announcement that their tower will close, isn't the one they'd hoped for.
"We are disappointed in their decision," said CWA Airport Director of Operations, James Olson.
The airport tower at CWA is one of 149 closing, thanks to federal spending cuts. Officials at the airport say five tower workers will be laid off.
"It's going to be more procedural changes for us, how we operate, communications that we have when we're out on the runways and that," said Olson.
The tower will close by early May, but airport officials said travelers shouldn't notice much of a difference.
"We're not going to lose any flights, the airport is going to remain operational," said Olson.
Airport administrators said control of the flights at CWA will be given to Minneapolis Air Control, something officials said has happened before.
"We used to operate like this years ago, without no control tower," said Olson.
Still, CWA officials are not happy to lose the tower.
"The tower does make it easier for everyone to operate, but we will have to continue, we understand the budget cuts and we will just continue to operate the airport," said Olson.
They say they're not sure if this will be a permanent cut, but they hope it won't be.
Central Wisconsin Airport's control tower will be closing.
The airport's director of operations and maintenance tells Newsline 9 that the tower will be closing because of forced spending cuts.
The towers are contracted through a company called Midwest Tower. Right now five people work at CWA's control tower. Airport officials say all five people will be let go.
This afternoon the FAA announced 149 towers across the country will close, including eight in Wisconsin.
It's all because of the forced spending cuts that went into effect earlier this month.
