More >> STEVENS POINT (WAOW) - An administrator at St. Peter's Middle School in Stevens Point says a seventh-grade boy collapsed and died in school on Tuesday morning. Administrator Todd Kuckkahn said Wednesday that no circumstances surrounding the death of Joey Miller were being released other than he died in school. St. Peter's is a Roman Catholic school. "We are shocked and saddened," Kuckkahn said. Gov. Scott Walker says he is pleased that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has agreed to let the coal-fired car ferry S.S. Badger continue to operate on Lake Michigan.
The EPA previously ordered Lake Michigan Carferry to stop coal ash discharges from the S.S. Badger by last December. But the agency said Friday the two sides had reached a proposed agreement extending the deadline to the end of the 2014 sailing season.
Walker says his goal was to have the S.S. Badger continue sailing, while protecting the lake. Walker says he is hopeful the necessary changes can be made in the agreed upon timeline to ensure the ferry can continue operating.
The 60-year-old ferryboat hauls cars and people across the lake between Ludington, Mich., and Manitowoc between May and October.
