Snowmobilers enjoying long season

It's been one of the best snowmobile seasons in recent history.

"I call it mid-season form," said Allan Zahrt. "Everything's smooth and flat. It's just wonderful."

"Conditions on the trail right now are excellent," said Jon Daniels, Snowmobile/ATV Coordinator for Marathon County. "Like I said they're better now than they've been all season this year."

Last year, because of poor conditions, trails in Marathon County were only open for a few days. But this year, it's already spring and trails are still open.

Officials say it could be one for the record books.

"The latest that we have been open in the last 23 years has been March 24th," said Daniels

Unless something drastic happens this weekend we'll break that.

"I think it's a likelihood that we may be doing that this year," said Daniels. "Because I'm sure that with conditions the way they are, we're going to make it through the weekend and that should carry us beyond March 24th."

Zart also says it's been a season to remember.

"Because the snow conditions have lasted so long, the trail conditions are the best they'll probably ever get," said Zahrt. "Probably the best we've seen in five years."

Officials in Marathon County say they don't know when trails there will close.
Snowmobile trails in Vilas and Oneida counties are closing March 31st.
