Adams man gets probation in deadly boat crash

ADAMS COUNTY (WAOW) - Juneau County court officials say an Adams man who was driving a boat last summer that crashed and killed a man was fined and sentenced to a year of probation Monday.

As part of a deferred prosecution agreement, Christopher Collins, 23, will not be prosecuted for felony homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle if he complies with certain conditions for five years, court officials said.

Investigators say Collins was driving a boat July 21 on Castle Rock Lake that crashed into a rock shortly before midnight, killing Michael Miklavicic, 23, of Friendship. Miklavicic was one of five people riding in the boat.

Collins was convicted of misdemeanor causing injury by intoxicated operation of a boat. Court officials say he was fined $631 and a one-year jail sentence was stayed pending completion of one year of probation with total sobriety.

According to online court records, two other charges, a felony and a misdemeanor, were dismissed as part of a plea bargain.
