Wayne Sankey is in his 15th year at the helm of Pacelli Cardinals baseball and throughout his tenure he's developed a winning tradition for the program.
"The biggest thing for us is that I want the guys to work hard and have fun doing it," says Sankey. "We talk about our expectations, and I think once you talk to the kids and you have expectations for those kids from the first day of practice, I think kids want that."
The players know how much the winning tradition means to the program.
"It just means a lot to be a part of this and you wanna keep it going as much as you can so you gotta work hard at it," says senior utility player, Kyle Rogers.
The successful reputation has the Cardinals ranked 9th in Division 3 for the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association's preseason poll, but the team says that's not what drives the Cardinals' focus.
"Rankings are rankings, you still have to come out and play every day," says senior catcher, Jesse Raczek. "We're all striving to go far and I think that as long as we come together and play as a team every game, we're gonna go far."
The Cardinals are determined to get to the state tournament this season and they all agree on what it's going to take get there.
"Just hard work and determination to get us to the next level," raves Rogers.
Jesse Raczek wants his last season to be the best of his four years.
"Every year is a new tradition. We come out and try to be better than the last year."
