Lawmaker: May rethink Lac du Flambeau grant

MADISON (AP) -

A Wisconsin lawmaker says he may push to reconsider a $250,000 state grant for a Lac du Flambeau cultural center after it and other Chippewa bands dramatically raised their planned walleye take.

Rep. Dean Kaufert, a Republican from Neenah, accused the bands of breaking an agreement to limit their take to allow sport anglers certain daily bag limits.

Tribal leaders last week said they raised their spearing declaration to feed their communities. But they have also been irritated by the state's resumption of a wolf hunt and the relaxation of some mining standards.

Kaufert said he plans to bring up the grant money at an April meeting by the state Building Commission.

Tom Paulson, president of the Lac Du Flambeau Tribe, did not immediately return a phone message.
