Merrill teen burns hands in mattress fire

MERRILL (WAOW) - The Merrill Fire Department says a teenager burned his hands Tuesday while trying to put out a fire that started in an upstairs mattress at his home.

Capt. Scott Krause said the fire erupted about 10:30 a.m. as two teenagers home on spring break reported playing video games in an upstairs bedroom.

Krause said the teenagers reported the fire started because they had a cigarette lighter that exploded. Krause said the cause of the fire remained under investigation.

Krause said the home suffered mostly smoke damage because a fire extinguisher was used and it helped contain the blaze until firefighters arrived.

There was at least one adult in the home at the time of the fire but she was downstairs, Krause said.
