Domtar announces sale of Port Edwards mill

Domtar Corp. announced the sale of its mothballed Port Edwards mill to DMI Acquisitions, a company headquartered in Columbus, Ohio.

Domtar said Wednesday the sale includes the land and buildings at the site, but excludes the adjacent hydroelectric dam on the Wisconsin River, which Domtar will continue to own and operate to provide power to its Nekoosa mill.

No sales price was disclosed.

The Port Edwards mill closed in June 2008, eliminating more than 500 jobs.

DMI Acquisitions President DaMenga Weaver said the 192-acre mill site has extensive rail facilities, making it attractive for new warehouse and light manufacturing opportunities for energy, agricultural and wood products businesses.

DMI Acquisitions is the real estate and development division of DMI Metals Inc., which specializes in brokering and recycling metals in U.S. and international markets, spokeswoman Michelle Moore said.

"This is the first of what we hope will be several redevelopment projects," she said.

The Port Edwards site includes a 900,000 square foot production facility, a 286,000 square foot climate-controlled warehouse, a 141,000-square foot office building and a 13,000 square foot data center, Moore said.

DMI Acquisitions has no tenants lined up for the property yet and is working with Port Edwards officials to identify companies looking to expand, she said.

"We are in the preliminary stages of identifying what the opportunities are," she said in a telephone interview from Columbus.

In a statement, Mark Bessette, general manager of Domtar's nearby Nekoosa Mill said, "Domtar has been working diligently with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and other parties for several years to prepare the site and find the right purchaser for the Port Edwards assets. ...We are pleased that DMI will bring new economic activity to the site, for the benefit of the community."
