Athlete of the Week: Northland Pines' Johnny Schwenn

Johnny Schwenn started his senior year with a concussion, keeping him out of the football season. But, he says it turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

"It just really gave me the fuel to try and work on track and just really focus on what was important"

Schwenn has been to the state track meet every year since he first laced up the spikes as a freshman, but it's his leadership ability that has his coach, John Hayes, glad that he's on the team.

"He's just a great competitor and a good leader on our team. He really focuses on teaching the kids, and he does a fantastic job at that. He's always willing to help my younger athletes" said Hayes.

Last season in the 400 meter dash Schwenn missed the state podium by an extremely thin margin. And that's what has driven him even harder when preparing for this year.

"When I'm in the weight room I always think about that. 'How much did you lose by? You were .06 from getting on that podium.' It just really gives me the fuel needed to try my best" said Schwenn.

"Last season I know he was a little bit disappointed that he didn't make the podium. That's gonna be one of our goals this year, to see if we can get him on that podium" coach Hayes added.

Schwenn focuses on the team goals of Northland Pines Track and Field, but he knows that standing on the state podium would be the perfect way to end his high school career.

Schwenn said "It would just be a really awesome feeling. I've been working a long time for this and it'd just be really great to reach my goals."
