WAUSAU (WAOW) - A longtime Marathon County assistant district attorney is the county's newest judge.

Gov. Scott Walker said Thursday he appointed LaMont Jacobson to replace Vincent Howard, who retired.

"Mr. Jacobson has dedicated 30 years to public service," Walker said in a statement. "His experience as an award-winning prosecutor and family court commissioner are outstanding preparation for the bench. I am confident he will be a fair and impartial judge who honors the Constitution and rule of law."

Jacobson joined the prosecutor's office in Marathon County in January 1989. He also worked in district attorney offices in Dunn and Vernon counties.

Jacobson, 59, said Thursday he expected to start his new $128,000-a-year job within six weeks.

"I am humbled and honored by the appointment," he said. "It was time for a change. And time to grow professionally. It allows me to continue my career in public service in a different capacity."

Jacobson has tried about 500 cases, including about 100 jury trials, Walker said. In 2009, Jacobson was selected as the Assistant DA of the Year by the Wisconsin District Attorneys Association.

Wausau Police Chief Jeff Hardel calls Jacobson the "go to guy" in the district attorney's office. "He has an outstanding work ethic, has superior knowledge of the law, has great

court presence and is highly ethical. LaMont is open, respectful and has a great reputation in the community."

Jacobson is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse (1976) and University of Minnesota School of Law (1979).

Jacobson joins three other former Marathon County prosecutors on the bench - Greg Grau, Jill Falstad and Greg Huber. The fifth judge is former public defender Mike Moran.
