Cold weather delays lawn and garden work

Last year, unseasonably warm temperatures resulted in an early start for those looking forward to working in their gardens.

This year, it is a different story.

With heavy snow still on the ground lawn care companies have yet to begin their busy season. For some, that means they have had to delay hiring part-time workers. Scott's Enterprises Manager Phil Hopkins says, "We are really looking forward to getting out there. But right now we and other lawn care services have to wait until mother nature cooperates."

Hopkins says he has received many calls about services from customers. So, he is eager to begin the season.

At Red's Market in Rothschild, workers are busy tending to tender plants in the greenhouses.

Outside, those greenhouses have snow and ice surrounding them.

Helen McGowan of Red's Market says,  "We are doing what we can with baskets and small plants inside. It is a challenge to know what we will have too much of and not enough of, it is really a challenge. Right now, it looks like it will be awhile before even the hardiest of perennials can be uncovered,"

Still, lawn and garden workers know that the warmth will arrive soon and they will be busy.
