Mosinee man faces federal weapons charge

WAUSAU (WAOW) - A 31-year-old Mosinee man ordered to stand trial in state court on charges he sexually assaulted a woman and held her against her will now faces new weapons charges in federal court.

U.S Attorney John Vaudreuil said Wednesday that a grand jury in Madison indicted Julian Alvarez, 31, with being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition.

Vaudreuil said the indictment alleges that on October 5, Alvarez possessed three 9mm handguns, a .45-caliber handgun and 9mm ammunition.

The maximum punishment for the charge is 10 years in federal prison, the prosecutor said in a statement.

Alvarez is charged in Marathon County Circuit Court with second-degree sexual assault, false imprisonment, battery and strangulation and suffocation, according to the criminal complaint. He is to enter pleas to the charges May 2.

They were filed after a woman passed a note to a bank teller asking for help. The woman told investigators she had a relationship with Alvarez and he had abused her and threatened her with a gun.

Alvarez is also charged in state court with four counts of being a felon in possession of guns.
