Wood Co. Sheriff's Department receives tracking collars for K9s

WOOD COUNTY (WAOW) -

The Wilderness Sportsmans Club is teaming up with the Wood County Sheriff's Department.

The club raised money for tracking collars to help the sheriff's department keep tabs on its four legged officers.

This comes after one of the K9's, Toro, went missing for two days last month.

Since his return, Toro's fame has skyrocketed in central Wisconsin.

"We kind of get the feeling how it is living with someone famous now, I guess," said Thomas Reichert, Wood County Sheriff. "He seems to take it all in stride.

It was that attention to Toro that led club president Don Allworden to help raise money for one of the collars.

"We heard about it right away on the news," said Allworden. "My wife actually came up with the idea. She said why don't you talk to the club about it and see what they'd say about donating a collar for him for a dog tracker, so that's what we did."

Reichert says the new tracking collars will help them take better care of a very valuable piece of their team.

"In the terms of training and the cost of the dog, you know I would estimate the cost to be somewhere in the neighborhood of $25,000 when you're done."

On Thursday, the sheriff's department presented a plaque to the club.

Celebrity K9 Toro did not make an appearance, but his follow officer, Rex, did.

The Wilderness Sportsman Club raised money for one of the collars.

The second collar was paid for by the Moser family.
