There may be new hope for the control tower at the Central Wisconsin Airport.
"The longer it's delayed, the greater chance we have of
keeping the tower open," said James Olson, Director of Operations and
Administrators say the tower at CWA was scheduled to close
on May 5th, due to budget cuts. But because of legal challenges, the
FAA pushed that back until mid-June. Airport leaders are hoping that gives them
additional time to fight the pending closure.
"It helps us," said
Olson. "We were working again through all the issues of the tower
closing, and at this point we are still working through those issues."
Airport administrators say they were surprised by Friday's announcement.
"We were hoping something would come down at least for
the towers that were scheduled to close this Sunday," said Olson. "But
we were surprised that they did make the decision to close or to stay until
after the June 15th deadline."
The airport in Mosinee is just one of more than 140 airports
across the country facing a similar fate.
"This has been a complex process and we need to get
this right," said U.S. Transportation Secretary, Ray LaHood. "Safety is our top priority. We will use this additional time
