It seems like winter just doesn't want to go away. Central Wisconsin saw a little bit of snow Friday night
into Saturday morning.
That new snow has some people rooting on spring, while
others are cherishing winter for as long as they can.
Just a few weeks ago tubers enjoyed Sylvan Hill, cross-country
skiers headed out to Nine-Mile Forest, and snowmobilers whipped around trails across
But now, it's a much different story. So, with winter
winding down, what's left to enjoy? Managers at Granite Peak
say their season is still in full swing.
"Winter doesn't want to leave, which is incredible,"
said Granite Peak General Manager Vicki Baumann.
Granite Peak officials say
they've made more snow this year than ever before. They say the number of
skiers and snowboarders is up as well.
"This time of year, people are waiting for the snow to
melt, but we have those people who don't want the snow to leave," Baumann told
Skiers Newsline 9 spoke with say they're enjoying the longer winter.
"I think it should stay longer," said David Stine of
"I'm kind of enjoying the winter," Josh Smiley of
Rosholt told Newsline 9.
Last year, the ski hill closed three weeks early. But this
year, managers say the season is actually extended.
While skiers up at Granite Peak
love all the extra snow, owners at Rib Mountain Golf Course are hoping it will
all just go away, so that they can begin their season.
"It's too long. I love winter, but not in March and April,"
said Rib Mountain Golf Course owner Mike Oliva.
Owners say they hope to open here in the next few weeks.
"This might be one of the latest ones," Oliva said.
So whether it's enjoying the last few days of winter-like
weather, or hoping spring temperatures would hurry up, one thing is for sure—you
never know what you'll get from Mother Nature in Wisconsin.
Granite peak will be open
Sunday, but will close during the week. It will re-open on Saturday for the final
day of the season.
The snowmobile trails opened in Vilas CountyFriday at 5 p.m.
