DNR: Vilas County crash kills 20th snowmobiler

PHELPS (WAOW) - The state Department of Natural Resources says a 46-year-old man was killed in a snowmobile crash in Vilas County on Sunday, becoming the 20th fatality of the winter season.

Brian Pietenpol of Phelps went airborne with his snowmobile for about 35 feet before it flipped over and landed on top of him, DNR warden Tim Price said Tuesday.

DNR snowmobile safety administrator Gary Eddy said the man was returning to his home about 6 p.m. when he struck two snowbanks, causing the snowmobile to go airborne. The crash occurred in the Vilas County Township of Phelps.
