NEW ORLEANS (WAOW) - UW-Stevens Point basketball player Sam Barber was honored Monday.
The university athletic department reports that the Pointer women's guard was named the 2013 State Farm/WBCA NCAA Division III Player of the Year.
The D.C. Everest alum accepted the award in News Orleans Monday.
"Obviously this is a huge accomplishment that says a lot about our program and even more about Sam as a person," Pointers head coach Shirley Egner was quoted as saying in the release. "To be named the National Player of the Year is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Her competitive spirit and dedication to improving her skill set every off season allowed our team to experience success at an incredibly high level the past three years."
Barber adds the award to her already stand out career. The WBCA First Team All-American earned the WIAC Player of the Year awards two years in a row.
Starting all 30 games this year, she helped lead the Pointers to a 24-6 season and a sixth straight conference tournament title in 2013.
Barber joins Amanda Nechuta as the second player in the UWSP women's basketball history to win the award.
