Rain and melting snow could cause flooding

Rain fell through most of the afternoon Tuesday. Officials say, mix that rain with melting snow and waters are expected to rise.

Department of Natural Resources officials say the expected rain during the next few days will run off into streams instead of soaking into the ground because the ground is still frozen in most spots.

The last bit of snow is melting and there is ice floating in many rivers. Officials say those combined factors will increase the chances of flooding, but they do expect it to be relatively minor.

Officials warn people on farmlands and houses close to the rivers to remain cautious.

"In general if you do live in a flood plain or a house I would recommend common sense things like having a back packed with some of the essentials in case you do have to leave quickly: DNR Conservation Warden Mike Rader said.

Rader also warns people who may be fishing, either by the shore or in a boat, to remain careful. They say the rising waters can cause strong water currents.
