Village of Brokaw moves forward with lawsuit

The Village of Brokaw is moving forward with a lawsuit against the company that bought the old Wausau Paper mill.

Village board president Jeffrey Weisenberger announced the news at a board meeting Tuesday night. Weisenberger said leaders are trying to prevent blight.

The village sued Brokaw Development because it claims the company violated an ordinance related to clearing out the vacant building.

Developers were also at tonight's meeting and responded.

"You can't resolve something when one side complains," Eric Spiritas, President of Brokaw Development, LLC, said. "You need to fill in both sides and find a resolution and that's what we're working towards."

"We're just trying to protect the village," Weisenberger said. "We're a small community. We have a rough time getting survival anyhow and a big firm like this could come in and devastate the village with just an asbestos spill."

A court hearing is set for April 26th. But village leaders say they could reach a settlement before then.
