Ex-coach in sex case to enter pleas May 1

NEILLSVILLE (WAOW) - A judge has set May 1 for a former Thope High School coach to enter pleas to charges accusing him of having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl on his track team.

Scott Bergman, 43, waived his right to a preliminary hearing Thursday and Clark County Circuit Judge Jon Counsell ordered him to stand trial, according to online court records.

Bergman is charged with felony sexual assault of a student by school staff and two misdemeanor counts of having sex with a child age 16 or older.

Bergman was an assistant track coach at Thorp High before being told in December that his contract would not be renewed.

Bergman volunteered with the boys and girls track teams for five years before being hired as a paid assistant three years ago, Superintendent James Montgomery said. He was not a teacher in the school.
