April snow delays golf season

Pine Valley golf course in Marathon opened on March 14 last year, when warm weather arrived much earlier. This year is a much different story.

The pro shop is the only place open at Pine Valley Golf Course as snow continues to cover the greens.

"We're a whole month behind. Obviously we can't do anything about Mother Nature," said Ryan Wendorf, head golf professional at Pine Valley.

"We're just pushing everything back and hopefully the warm weather comes soon."

The difference between last year's warm weather and this year's April freeze can be seen on Wendorf's computer. His spreadsheet from last year is full of scheduled tee times while this year's spreadsheet remains empty.

"Hopefully we get a couple of days in the 60s where the snow can really go quick then," Wendorf said.

If the weather ever does cooperate, the hope is to get this course open by the end of next week, which would be the latest that Pine Valley has opened in quite some time.

But high school golfers can't wait that long, forcing them to practice indoors.

"You just get kind of sick of being in here after awhile. You're just hitting a wall day after day and you're putting on a green that you know the line of every day," Marathon senior golfer Evan Olerich said.

"Golf is a short year. This is even shorter now. Now we only have a month and a half of golf and we haven't even been out on the course yet."

The Marathon golf team found one positive of practicing inside.

"A lot of these guys have come a long way with their swings this year. And I think part of it is due to the fact that we've been in the gym and just working on swings," Marathon golf coach Ryan Winkler said.

"I hate to say that it's been a good thing for some of us but it has been. That they've really worked on their fundamentals and hopefully that will help us when we do get on the course."

When they can get on the course remains a question mark.
