Jury sent back to deliberate in therapist killing

Jurors deciding the fate of mental patient who slashed a New York City psychotherapist to death with a meat cleaver say they remain deadlocked on their seventh day of deliberations.

Jurors sent a note to the judge on Thursday saying they were unable to reach a verdict in the murder trial of David Tarloff. But the judge told them to return on Friday for further deliberations.

Tarloff doesn't dispute that he killed Kathryn Faughey in February 2008. But defense lawyers say Tarloff's schizophrenia made him so psychotic that he couldn't tell what he was doing was wrong.

Prosecutors say Tarloff carried out a deliberate plan and understood it was illegal.

Tarloff told authorities he set out to rob Faughey's officemate and encountered her instead.
