UW-Stevens Point held a lead into the eighth inning of game one but UW-Whitewater fought back to take game one, 5-2. The Warhawks jumped out to the lead in game two and took the nightcap, 5-3.
In game one, UWSP jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. A single by Casey Barnes, scoring Dan Douglas, started the inning off.
Whitewater tied the game in the seventh on a passed ball that scored Mikole Pierce.
Whitewater went up for good in the eighth, scoring one run on a sacrifice fly by Jared Fon.
Whitewater added two more runs in the top of the ninth. A sacrifice fly scored David Cladis for the inning's first run. That was followed up by Herum's single, plating Andrew Bauer.
Ryan Schilter reached base three times, driving in one run.
Tom Kerndt recorded the win for Whitewater. He allowed two runs over 7 2/3 innings. He struck out four, walked two and surrendered seven hits.
JP Feyereisen suffered the loss, surrendering three runs, two earned, in 7 1/3 innings of work. He struck out six.
In game two, Sean Gerber did all he could to give the Pointers a boost in game two, but it wasn't enough to get past Whitewater, as UWSP lost 5-3.
Whitewater went up for good in the second, scoring one run on an RBI double by Steve Bartlein.
Whitewater got one-run rallies in the third inning and the sixth. In the third, Whitewater scored on a groundout by Jared Fon, bringing home David Cladis.
One run in the bottom of the seventh helped UWSP Pointers close its deficit to 3-1. A groundout by Casey Barnes fueled UWSP Pointers' comeback. Lambert ended the inning by getting Bobby Gregorich to ground out.
Two runs in the bottom of the ninth helped UWSP Pointers close its deficit to 5-3. An RBI double by Gerber and a sacrifice fly by Barnes gave UWSP Pointers life. Brock Liston ended the game by getting Brandon Kranz to strike out.
Gerber had a busy day at the plate, collecting three extra-base hits. He doubled in the first, seventh, and ninth innings.
Justin Lambert got it done on the mound on the way to a win for Whitewater. He allowed three runs over 8 2/3 innings. Lambert struck out three, walked none and gave up nine hits.
The two teams return to action on Sunday afternoon in Whitewater to close out the four-game series.
The softball team had a WIAC doubleheader at UW-Stout on Saturday, playing on the Blue Devils football field because of the softball field conditions.
In game one, the Pointers dominated from the beginning. UWSP hit five home runs in the contest, getting a grand slam and a solo home run from Maddy Sawdey, as they would win 19-1 in five innings.
Game two was a different story. Stout's Sam Hastings hit two home runs, including a 2-run shot to tie game. Laura Vanderhoof's pinch hit, ground-rule double won the game in bottom of eighth, as the Blue Devils were victorius 5-4.
