Truck rolls over, spills 2,500 gallons of milk

STEVENS POINT (WAOW) - The Portage County Sheriff's Department says a semi-truck hauling 5,800 gallons of milk rolled over on a foggy Highway 10 and closed the highway for about four hours early Monday.

Sgt. Kevin Sorenson said the driver, a 36-year-old Green Lake man, was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield with non-life threatening injuries. Sorenson said about 2,500 gallons of milk spilled from the truck in the rollover, which left the tractor cab in the ditch and the trailer blocking both lanes of Highway 10.

Sorenson said the truck, owned by Hupf Trucking of Beaver Dam, got to the side of eastbound Highway 10 on a curve and when the driver tried to swing back, he "overcorrected," causing the rollover.

The crash happened about 5 a.m. about a mile west of Interstate 39, investigators said.

The load of milk was headed to Grassland Butter in Greenwood, Sorenson said.

The driver was wearing a seat belt and it probably saved his life because the tractor cab rolled over completely at least once, Sorenson said.
