Moratorium ends on winter utility

Moratorium ends on winter utility shut-offs

The moratorium on utilities shutting off power to non-paying customers has ended. The state forbids utilities from disconnecting customers who are behind on their bills from November 1 thru April 15.

This year, our weather has been unseasonably cold across North Central Wisconsin. The cold air and end of the moratorium causes concern for non-profits who work with the needy.

At Wausau's Salvation Army they provide heat assistance for those who have fallen behind on payments. "If someone comes in and has their bill, they can meet with our Social Services Director and we can try to help them out. We are also stocking up on blankets and things like that for those people who may lose their heat," says Lieutenant Jacob Tripp Co-Pastor at the Salvation Army.

The Wisconsin Public Service Commission urges customers who are behind on their bills to contact their utility in an effort to work out a payment plan.

A number of agencies in our area provide help to those behind on utility bills. You can Contact Energy Services, Inc. (715) 842-3111. Wausau Salvation Army (7150 845-4272. United Way of Marathon County (715) 848-2255 or Catholic Charities.
