Emergency Management officials unveil new command center

Marathon County Emergency Management officials have unveiled a new command center on Wednesday. The center will be activated during the a disaster like a tornado or other hazardous or special events.

On Wednesday, emergency officials held an open house. Numerous county and city employees attended to learn how the command center would operate in the event of a disaster.

Leaders say the center will help officials develop strategies, coordinate first responders and help communicate to the public during a major disaster.

Emergency Management Director Steve Hagman says it's a big improvement from what they used to have.

"It used to take us 4-6 hours to activate and by that time, sometimes we're through an event and we should be able to activate sooner and reach out to those incident commanders in the field so that they have a resource to make them successful," Hagman said.

Hagman says the command center was funded through county dollars and a federal grant.

A statewide tornado drill is scheduled for 1:45 p.m. on Friday. Emergency officials say that drill will be the first time the new command center will be up and running.
