UPDATE: Police say man had heroin in his system at time of deadly Wausau crash

Wausau Police say a 24-year-old Rothschild man had heroin in his system, when he crashed on East Thomas Street in Wausau.

Officials say Michael Dixon died in the crash, which happened back in March. An autopsy showed his death was caused by injuries from the crash.

Wausau Police Captain Bryan Hilts told Newsline 9 heroin is considered a contributing factor to Dixon's death.

Police say his 4-year-old son, Jordan Dixon, was also in the car at the time of the crash. Officials say he was critically injured, but is now in better condition at St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield.

Authorities say an uncapped syringe, spoon and lighter were found in the car. Investigators say speed is also considered a factor.

Michael Dixon's family told Newsline 9 the 24-year-old struggled with addiction. They say Dixon was released from a rehab facility just one day before the crash that took his life.

Wausau Police say the investigation is now over.
