SHAWANO (WAOW) - The Shawano County Sheriff's Department says two people are suspects in the January robbery of a rural Marion home about a day after the elderly couple who lived there had died.
Capt. Thomas Tuma said a 32-year-old Junction City man and a 23-year-old Wisconsin Rapids woman are suspects. Neither have been arrested and no charges have been filed, but the man is jailed in an unrelated case, Tuma said.
Tuma said a "significant amount of cash" was taken in the break-in but he declined to be more specific.
Eldore Mielke, 90, died Jan. 7 and his wife Malinda, also 90, died the next day, authorities said. Police say the burglary occurred Jan. 9.
The couple had been married 68 years.
There's no evidence the suspects knew the couple, Tuma said. "It is not uncommon in today's world to see people willing to travel great distances to commit crimes."
Asked whether any of the money has been recovered, Tuma said some "evidence" has been found but he declined to elaborate.
