Wausau running group organizes run to benefit Boston

The Boston Marathon bombing is an event hitting close to home for Andy Davis.

"We have some friends that were out there running and were near the finish line, that were in that spot where the bombing took place twenty minutes before," Davis told Newsline 9.

Davis and his wife Brooke are part of the Wausau Area Striders.  That's an informal running group consisting of about 60 runners meeting Tuesday evenings at 5:30 at the Wausau East High School track, 2607 North 18th Street, Wausau.

"Runners are kind of a family in everything we do, as far as the running, the camaraderie, and just the support for each other," Davis said.

That's why the group is organizing a three mile community run Saturday, April 27 at noon.

"It's just a gathering of people that love to run, love to get out, and we'd like to support Boston and the friends, family of everyone that was effected by the tragedy," Brooke Davis said.

The race will begin on the 400 Block in downtown Wausau and follow the River Edge Parkway.  That's a trail between the city's center tracking parallel with the Wisconsin River.

The Davis family is asking those who join make an online donation to the One Fund Boston.  That's a foundation started by the governor of Massachusetts and the mayor of Boston.  The fund benefits the families of those impacted by the bombings.

"Everything goes toward the friends and families in need," Davis said.

And from a group of runners in northern Wisconsin, this husband and wife team say they hope to make a small difference in the support of fellow runners and their families so many miles away.

"I think that's what running is all about.  Getting out there and pushing yourself, but also having fun.  And that's what our group's about," Davis said.
