MARSHFIELD (WAOW) -

Communities nationwide are participating in national Drug Take Back Day, and that includes cities in central Wisconsin.

People dropped off unwanted or expired prescription drugs at the Marshfield Clinic. This is the sixth time the national event has been held.

According to the Drug Enforcement Agency, more than two million pounds of those medications have been taken off the street in the last five years across the country.

Medical experts in Marshfield say it's a problem they hope to help fight.

"Nationwide, this is one of the fastest growing problems. We are seeing declines, but prescription drug abuse has risen dramatically since 2010," said Danielle Luther, with the Marshfield Clinic Center for Community Outreach.

Two more prescription drug drop offs will be held in Marshfield Saturday.
