Wausau student is presidential scholars semifinalist


WAUSAU (WAOW) - A Wausau East High School student is among about 550 semifinalists for the 2013 Presidential Scholars award, the nation's highest honor for graduating high school seniors.

State School Superintendent Tony Evers said Friday that Brady G. Becker of Wausau East and nine other Wisconsin students are finalists for the honor, which is based on academic and artistic achievement plus leadership in their schools and communities.

The Commission on Presidential Scholars will make the final selection of the nearly 150 winners, including one male and one female from each state, Evers said. 

The winners will travel to Washington, D.C., where they will meet with government officials, educators, authors, musicians, and scientists. They also will receive a Presidential Scholars medallion at a ceremony sponsored by the White House. The presidential scholars program was established in 1964.
