Some Wis. lakes may have ice for fishing opener

OCONTO, Wis. (AP) -

Some anglers in Wisconsin may be ice fishing for the season opener.

Wisconsin's fishing season opener is May 4, and there's still ice on many northern lakes.

State Department of Natural Resources officials say people can still ice fish, however they warn those anglers to use extreme caution and to wear a life jacket.

DNR Conservation Warden Joe Paul tells WLUK-TV there is 21 on Wheeler Lake in Lakewood and in general 12 to 22 inches across northern Oconto County.

But heading south looks more promising. Lake Winnebago is wide open.

Besides lakes, DNR officials say there are other fishing opportunities on opening day, including trout fishing since area streams are flowing.
