Marathon Co. at high risk for grass fires this season

As the weather warms up, firefighters are reminding people to be careful when burning outdoors.

Officials said this time of year, there is a high risk for grass fires.

A Wausau Fire Lieutenant said they responded to a grass fire Sunday on Franklin Street in the Town of Wausau.

Officials said it sparked after the wind carried flames from a barrel fire to a grassy area because of wind gusts.

"The vegetation from last year is brown and dry and it's standing up above the ground and is at a pretty high risk for a fire right now," said Wausau Fire Department Lt. Wally Olson.

Officials said they put out the fire in about 30 minutes.

They said right now, Marathon County is at a high risk for more grass fires.

Fire officials add it's important to avoid throwing cigarettes on the ground and to watch grills closely this season.
