Ex-Thorp coach pleads not guilty in sex case

NEILLSVILLE (WAOW) - A former Thorp High School coach pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges accusing him of having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl on his track team.

Scott Bergman, 44, is charged with felony sexual assault of a student by school staff and two misdemeanor counts of having sex with a child age 16 or older.

Clark County Circuit Judge Todd Wolf did not immediately set a trial date, according to online court records.

Bergman volunteered with the boys and girls track teams for five years before being hired as a paid assistant three years ago, Superintendent James Montgomery said. He was not a teacher in the school.

According to court records, investigators found nude and partially nude pictures of the student on Bergman's cell phone and he expressed love for the girl in text messages.

Investigators say the girl's diary described sexual encounters with Bergman.
