Longtime Merrill businesses to close

MERRILL (WAOW) - The owners of  two longtime clothing stores say they are closing the downtown Merrill businesses.

Jack and Sherry Kleinschmidt said Friday they will begin a going out of business sale at Thelma's and The Guy's Shop on Thursday.

They plan to retire.

"We've enjoyed our time in business and made very good friends over the years," Jerry Kleinschmidt said in a statement. "We've had loyal clients who come to us from as far away as Iron Mountain, Mich., to the north, down to Madison and everywhere in between. It's going to be tough for us to leave so much of that behind, but it's time."

The couple purchased The Guy's Shop 17 years ago and Thelma's in 2001. They say the stores opened about 40 years ago.

Sherry Kleinschmidt worked for the stores' original owners starting in the mid-1970s when her husband was a local law enforcement officer.
