Anglers urged to use caution on waters with season opener

Wisconsin's fishing season opens Saturday. But, with the wild weather we have seen this week it seems hard to believe.

Some lakes in the north are snow covered from the storm that moved through the state Thursday. In some places, the snow sits on top of 20 inches of ice that has formed on lakes.

The Wisconsin DNR urges ice anglers need to be very aware of where they are as the ice is unstable, especially in areas near the shore.

In the central part of the state, lakes and rivers are open. Water is flowing fast in some areas so the Wisconsin Valley Improvement Company, which monitors the flow of water on the river, urges anglers to use caution.

WVIC Manager, Pete Hansen says, "While we do not have flooding, the water is moving fast and that can make it dangerous. Anglers who are in boats need to use extra caution near dams. Respect the dams and respect the water."
