Organizers say good turnout for GOP Convention

Officials said about 1,000 people attended a GOP event in central Wisconsin this weekend.

The State Republican Convention was held at the Patriot Center in Rothschild.

Some big names attended the event, including Governor Scott Walker and Congressman Paul Ryan.

That meant security was tight and Wisconsin State Patrol officers worked hard to keep the event running smoothly, working with officers from Marathon County and Rothschild Police throughout the weekend.

"We do work a couple of days, up to weeks in advance for these type of events, getting a security plan in place, work with our local agencies, sheriff's departments, in this particular case, Rothschild PD, and make sure that we have personnel that can respond and make sure it's a safe event for everybody," said Wisconsin State Patrol, Sgt. Travis Wanless.

State Patrol officials wouldn't comment about how many law enforcement officials were on duty at the event.

Convention organizers said turnout was good, especially during a non-election year.
