Proposal to stop funding for stray cats moves forward

MARATHON COUNTY (WAOW) -

A new plan may soon leave stray cats at the Marathon County Humane Society without a place to stay.

The County's Finance and Property Committee has approved a plan that would stop funding for stray cats.

The county says it doesn't have enough money in the budget to continue funding the animals.

Board members say the money should come from surrounding cities and towns. Under the recommendation, the board will give money to those municipalities to help pay for stray cats until 2016. But humane society leaders don't agree with the plan.

"I think we're all a little bit just confused, the task force is recommending that the county stand on exactly the bare minimal standards that the state statute says the county needs to do," said Mary Kirlin of the Marathon County Humane Society.

"From my perspective I'm going home pleased with the results of the meeting, I hope that the humane society supporters are as happy with this first step in the process," said Todd McDonald, a Marathon County Board Member.

The recommendation now goes to the full County Board.
