May: National motorcycle safety month

RIB MOUNTAIN (WAOW) -

Law enforcement officials in Wisconsin are joining a nationwide effort to promote motorcycle safety.

State transportation leaders say last year motorcycle deaths in Wisconsin increased by more than 30 percent from 2011. But this year, the number of fatalities is down. Officials say that could be because more riders were on the road longer last year, because of an early spring.

Police say as the weather warms and riders head back out, it's important to stay safe.

"Wear your safety equipment, and drive defensively," said Sgt. Bryan wrycha, Wisconsin State Patrol. "Drive as if you are invisible. These people can not see you. You need to make yourself visible to them, so they do see you."

Transportation officials say nearly 75 percent of fatal motorcycle crashes involved riders that were not wearing a helmet.
