Students enjoy robotic milkers on local farm

Some grade school students from Athens left their classrooms and toured a dairy farm Monday afternoon.

They saw some cows and new robotic milkers.

JTP Farms in Dorchester is excited about its new milking parlor. It's run by robots 24 hours a day.

The students saw the robots at work. Owners of the farm say there are advantages to the machines.

"Less problems of dealing with employee relations as well as increased benefits of the cows and productivity, they're a lot easier on the cows better handling the cows, seem to adapt to them fairly quickly and you don't have to worry about any animal abuse issues or anything like that," said owner Jake Peissig.

Owners say they have four robotic milkers on the farm, each one replaces a full-time employee.

The farm milks more than 200 cows a day.
