UPDATE: Big Flats fire destroys home, burns 14 acres

BIG FLATS (WAOW) - What started a fire that burned down a home, blackened about 14 acres of woods and threatened a much larger fire like one that occurred eight years ago was unknown Wednesday, Big Flats Fire Chief Dick Meyers said.

Investigators are still trying to determine whether the fire started outside and spread to the home or it started in one of three buildings on the propery and spread to the woods, Meyers said.

He referred questions about the cause to the state Department of Natural Resources.

Kent Glazer, a ranger at the DNR Ranger Station in Friendship, said the cause of the fire, which erupted about 8 p.m. Tuesday, remained under investigation.

"We have talked to several people," he said.

A man who lived at the home was on the property at the time the fire broke out, Glazer said. The home and two other buildings were destroyed, he said.

Any burning permits that had been issued were canceled Tuesday because of high fire danger conditions, he said.

Meyers said winds pushed flames, some shooting 15 feet high, through the trees, and the fire could have been much worse.

"The winds all of a sudden just died off. That is what saved us late at night," the fire chief said.

Meyers was fire chief eight years ago when a wild fire burned 3,410 acres in the Big Flats area. That fire broke out on May 5 in 2005, he said.

Meyers recalled how lucky the area was then, too, although that fire burned for four days. There were only two "very, very minor" injuries, he said.

Crews in Adams County worked for several hours Tuesday night to contain a fire in Big Flats.

Newsline 9 spoke with firefighters on the scene.

They say the fire broke out around 8 p.m. at a home on 15th Ct.

It was contained by the time our crew arrived on scene.

Officials say a home was badly damaged, and looks to be a total loss.

People inside were evacuated, but no one was hurt.

Multiple fire crews are on scene of a fire in the Town of Big Flats in Adams County.

According to a dispatcher, "multiple fires" are spreading at 15th Court in Big Flats due to dry and windy conditions. The dispatcher said the fire started around 8:00 p.m. Tuesday.

Firefighters from Adams, Big Flats, and Quincy are on scene along with the Department of Natural Resources, the dispatcher said.

No other information was available.
