Mayor: $17 M building planned in Stevens Point

STEVENS POINT (WAOW) - Stevens Point Mayor Andrew Halverson says a Wisconsin company is negotiating to build a $17 million plant on the city's east side.

"The hope would be to start construction this year," Halverson said Thursday.

Halverson said he could not divulge the name of the company because negotiations on a development agreement are ongoing and he would only say the business would be "related to logistics."

"This is in essence a new endeavor that would speak to a long-established industry in Wisconsin," the mayor said, declining to elaborate. "We are not going to talk about jobs numbers whatsoever."

The proposed building would be on 22 acres already serviced by existing utilities and roads, Halverson said.

Halverson said the city council has met behind closed doors to discuss negotiations regarding the project. Any development agreement must be approved by the council, he said.

The city recently announced a new $48 million project to develop an area near Crossroads Commons on 800 acres. That's the projected cost over 20 years for the government to provide all the infrastructure needed for a commercial development to be called East Park Commerce Center, the mayor said.
