Wausau West students take part in hands-on lesson

Students at Wausau West High School took part in an eye-opening lesson in the dangers of driving and texting.

The Wausau Police Department set up a new simulator for the students to try. It hooks up a real car to the simulator. Students wear goggles that show them video of the challenges they face on the roads and they text at the same time.

The police department purchased the technology for a price of $25,000 through money it received from the Greenheck Foundation and Community Foundation. Aspirus kicked in money to buy a large television screen so audience members can watch what the driver using the simulator sees.

The safety event also allowed students to drive golf carts in the parking lot while texting.

Organizers hope it will get kids thinking about their safety.

Wausau police hope to expose other community members to the simulator at other events in the future.
