NewPage: Chlorine gas leaks, no one hurt

Posted:

WISCONSIN RAPIDS (WAOW) - A small crack in a one-ton cylinder caused an unknown amount of chlorine gas to escape inside a building at NewPage on Thursday, Lt. Wade Wittenberg of the Wisconsin Rapids Fire Department said. No workers were exposed to it.

Five hazardous materials handlers from the paper mill and the fire department capped the leak and no one was hurt, he said. The leak was discovered Thursday afternoon when alarms detecting the leak sounded in the building with the cylinders.

The leak took about an hour to repair, Wittenberg said.

"We are unsure how it started. There was a small crack near a valve," he said. "We are not sure how much leaked."

NewPage spokesman Cliff Bowers said the leak occurred near the mill's water filtration area.

WISCONSIN RAPIDS (WAOW) - A spokesman for NewPage says hazardous material handlers from the paper mill and Wisconsin Rapids Fire Department were working to stop a "very small" chlorine gas leak.

Cliff Bowers said leak in a cylinder occurred Thursday near the mill's water filtration area. The haz-mat teams were attempting to put a cap on the cylinder, he said.

No worker was exposed to the leak, which occurred inside a building, and no one was hurt, Bowers said.

Wisconsin Rapids firefighter Matt Feder said some off-duty firefighters were called in to help respond to the emergency.
