Wis. group seeks volunteers to plant 500 gardens

The Victory Garden Initiative is seeking volunteers to plant 500 vegetable gardens in Milwaukee this month.

The nonprofit is named for efforts during World War I and II to have people grow food to support the war effort. It encourages people to plant gardens now as a way to improve nutrition and quality of life.

Director Gretchen Mead says the goal is to make sure everyone has access to fresh fruits and vegetables, no matter their income level.

The group aims to plant 500 gardens by May 25.

Volunteers can sign up each day between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. at Habitat for Humanity, 3726 N. Booth Ave., Milwaukee. There will be rallies for volunteers at 8:30 a.m. Saturday and 8:30 a.m. May 25.
