Frederick pitches Pointers to Midwest Regional Championship

The Pointers needed only one run on Saturday as junior Max Frederick (New London, WI/New London) threw a gem, scattering five Case Western Reserve hits on the afternoon as UW-Stevens Point secured its fifth trip to the NCAA Division III College World Series with a 1-0 win in the Midwest Regional championship game.

Box Score

This marks the fifth trip to the College World Series for UW-Stevens Point (39-9) and the fourth in the last eight years. The Pointers also set a new school record for wins in a season, eclipsing the previous mark of 38, set in 2005.

Scoreless through six and a half innings of play, Riley Spetz (Sevastopol, WI/Sevastopol) singled in the only run of the game in the bottom of the seventh, earning the Pointers the 1-0 victory.

Frederick went seven and two-thirds, scattering five hits while striking out three. Tyler Flood (Madison, WI/La Follette) came on in relief in the eighth and was perfect to earn the save, his third of the year.

The teams combined for eleven hits. Jimmy Coady (La Crosse, WI/Aquinas), the regional's Most Outstanding Player, finished the game 2-for-3 and Ryan Schilter (West Bend, WI/West) finished 2-for-4.

The Pointers will take on the winner of the Rose Hullman Regional on Friday, May 24. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

Tickets are available at the Fox Cities Stadium box office.
