State takes over Madison police shooting case

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- -

The Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation has taken over the investigation of the shooting death in Madison of a man who allegedly charged police officers with a sword.

The Dane County Medical Examiner identifies him as 43-year-old Brent E. Bozek.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports Bozek was shot Friday night after a day-long standoff that began when officers attempted to evict him from his condo, which was the subject of foreclosure proceedings.

Police say it ended when he emerged from the condo and charged at officers with a large sword. Police say they tried to stop him with non-lethal bean bag rounds, but he made a second charge.

Police spokesman Joel DeSpain says three officers have been put on paid leave, which is standard with officer-involved shootings.
