Rhinelander group plants 100 new trees

Carlson Funeral Home has started an anniversary tree planting project.

Monday, funeral home employees, along with several community groups, got to work.

They're planting 100 Liberty Elm trees around the Rhinelander area.

"This community was just full of elm trees years ago and people remember the canopy covered streets and parks and granted a lot of us won't see these trees mature, but there's a saying that character of a man is somebody who will plant a tree, knowing full well he'll never sit under the shade of it and this project has been a big proof of that," said Carlson Funeral Home Director, Bruce Carlson.

Organizers said they picked Liberty Elm trees because the native Elm population was decimated by Dutch Elm Disease.

They said the trees planted have been developed with resistance to the disease.
