Wisconsin transportation leaders and area police officers gathered at the State Patrol office in Rib Mountain to kick off several initiatives aimed at making roads safer.
Wisconsin Department of Transportation Secretary Mark Gottlieb said, "We want to have accident-free roads. That is our goal."
Roads considered "gateways" to tourist destinations also have electronic signs, which have the number of traffic fatalities on Wisconsin roads this year. Right now, the sign along I-39 near Mosinee reads 150 deaths.
Wisconsin State Patrol officers will take a new car that is half squad car and half taxi to fairs and community events. The signage on it drives home the point that it is cheaper to call a taxi or use safe ride home programs than to pay for a drunk driving arrest.
