Wisconsin business rallies to help tornado victims

RHINELANDER (WAOW) -

Some people in Wisconsin have already stepped up to lend a hand to the tornado victims.

In addition to Red Cross volunteers, employees at a Rhinelander company are also getting ready to send help to Oklahoma--more than 1,000 miles away.

"I think that's what you do when you grow up in the Midwest. I think Midwestern folks are folks who care about other people and want to help," said Internet Marketing Placement and Analysis Manager Gordon Magee.

The company, Doctors Foster and Smith, is known for distributing pet supplies, but this week leaders at the Rhinelander office will be collecting donations from employees. Company officials told Newsline 9 they'll then give a matching amount. It will most likely be donated to the Red Cross.

Employees at a central Wisconsin chapter said it will do a lot of good.

"It goes for direct support for food, shelter and clothing," said Regional Director Lora Hainy.

No members of central Wisconsin's Red Cross chapters have been sent to Oklahoma, but representatives said recruiting is ongoing.

"If we can get those matches up then the volunteers will be deployed," said Hainy. "It won't be too long before we have volunteers going out."

On Tuesday, Governor Scott Walker tweeted that members of the Wisconsin National Guard are also on stand by in case their help is needed in Oklahoma.
